The work is hands-on, sustained, and rooted in service, with measurable impact for both students and the organizations they support.</p><p><strong>A capstone built around real work, not theory</strong></p><p dir="ltr">The required senior-level Business Capstone is a project- and problem-based course designed to help students integrate and synthesize what they have learned across their undergraduate business education.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Students apply classroom knowledge alongside professional experience gained through their Co-op employment, bringing practical insight into budgeting, operations, supply chains, pricing, and organizational strategy. Each student team partners with a local nonprofit organization to collaboratively diagnose challenges, develop recommendations, and deliver actionable solutions.</p><p dir="ltr">Over the years, student consulting projects have addressed needs such as:</p><ul><li dir="ltr">Website development</li><li dir="ltr">Volunteer recruitment and retention strategies</li><li dir="ltr">Funding opportunities, including grants and revenue diversification</li><li dir="ltr">Inventory and supply chain management</li><li dir="ltr">Pricing strategy and operational planning</li></ul><p><strong>Long-term impact for students and the Flint community</strong></p><p dir="ltr">The Business Consulting Project was formally added to the curriculum in 2016, and its impact has grown steadily since then. To date, students have contributed&nbsp;<strong>nearly 5,700 hours</strong> of consulting support, benefiting&nbsp;<strong>20 nonprofit organizations</strong> through these partnerships.</p><p dir="ltr">For students, the experience provides tangible consulting credentials and a deeper understanding of how business decisions affect organizations and communities. For nonprofit partners, the projects offer capacity-building support, fresh perspectives, and solutions that strengthen long-term operations.</p><p><strong>Sharing results beyond campus</strong></p><p dir="ltr">Dr. Williams has also examined the educational and community impact of the capstone through formal research. In April 2024, he presented findings on the course at the Small Business Institute Conference, where his work was recognized with the&nbsp;<strong>Best Pedagogical Paper</strong> award. In this national leadership role, Kumon serves on the joint Executive Committee for SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society, and also serves as president of the SPS National Council.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">The council serves as the governing body for both organizations and is composed of 18 students and 18 physics professionals, representing SPS鈥檚 18 geographic zones. Together, the council evaluates policy, advances new initiatives, and shapes the future direction of physics and astronomy education nationwide.<br><br>On his new role, Dr. Kumon said:</p><p dir="ltr">鈥淚t is an honor and a privilege to serve the community of students in the 800+ chapters in the US and beyond. I look forward to maintaining and enhancing the benefits that SPS provides to its members, including scholarships, internships, leadership development, and networking opportunities. I also plan to advocate for strengthening physics and astronomy programs everywhere so that students can continue to achieve their goals to be professionals in these disciplines.鈥</p><p dir="ltr">Kumon has served as the SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma chapter advisor at 好色先生 for 14 years. During that time, the 好色先生 chapter has earned:</p><ul><li dir="ltr">14 Outstanding Chapter Awards</li><li dir="ltr">10 Distinguished Chapter Awards</li><li dir="ltr">2 Chapter Research Awards</li><li dir="ltr">1 Blake Lilly Award, which honors SPS chapters or members who excel in physics outreach to K鈥12 students and the public.</li></ul><p dir="ltr">In October, Kumon joined three 好色先生 students at the 2025 Physics and Astronomy Congress in Denver, Colorado. During the congress, Kumon was honored with the&nbsp;<strong>2025 SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award</strong>, the most prestigious recognition for advisors presented by the Society of Physics Students.<br><br>Reflecting on receiving the award, Dr. Kumon said:&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">鈥淭he credit for this award goes to the many physics majors and other students enamored by physics who have dedicated their time to maintain a regular weekly schedule of fun and engaging activities related to physics and astronomy for the campus community. I would also like to thank my colleagues in physics and natural sciences, and the 好色先生 Student Government for their support.鈥</p><p dir="ltr">The award recognizes exceptional leadership, mentorship, and sustained support of student-led SPS chapters. One advisor is selected each year nationally, with the award supporting the advisor, chapter, and academic department. This year, the ceremony was held at the Physics and Astronomy Congress, rather than the traditional winter meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers.</p><p dir="ltr">Kumon earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in physics and mathematics from Michigan State University and his PhD in physics from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include biomedical ultrasound, optical microscopy, and nondestructive evaluation of materials. His goal: unlock new levels of support and recognition for the University through bold corporate and philanthropic partnerships.</p><p dir="ltr">鈥淚鈥檝e made a career of stepping into challenges 鈥 that has taken me all over the world,鈥 said Pilger. 鈥淏ut this role lets me contribute in a new, deeply rewarding way.鈥</p><p dir="ltr">After graduating from 好色先生 (then GMI) with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Pilger earned a Master鈥檚 in Management as a Sloan Fellow at MIT. He spent his career building and expanding businesses around the world 鈥 from Nairobi to Tokyo and Shanghai.</p><p dir="ltr">With more than 18 years of P&amp;L responsibility, Pilger鈥檚 leadership highlights include:</p><ul><li dir="ltr"><strong>Doubling revenue to $250M</strong> and increasing EBITDA margin by 50% as President &amp; CEO of a five-company merger</li><li dir="ltr"><strong>Driving $100M in sales&nbsp;</strong>growth and record profits while expanding operations across East Africa</li><li dir="ltr"><strong>Growing Asian business by $150M</strong> through new joint ventures, new customer conquests, and operational optimization</li><li dir="ltr"><strong>Launching 10x year-one revenue growth</strong> as COO of a technology startup through innovation and commercialization</li></ul><p dir="ltr">Despite serving in President, CEO, COO, Chief Engineer, and Managing Director roles, Pilger says his passion has always been business development 鈥 building inspired teams, sharpening strategy, and delivering profitable growth. But eventually, he began asking a different question:</p><p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Where can I feel best about and most fulfilled in what I鈥檓 doing?</strong></em></p><p dir="ltr">Pilger鈥檚 return to 好色先生 was a purposeful decision. He sees opportunity in aligning 好色先生鈥檚 strengths with industry needs, particularly by substantially fortifying scholarships to grow and support our current and future students and updating campus labs and equipment to match what students will encounter in the field. That alignment, he says, reinforces the University鈥檚 value proposition: career-ready graduates who already know how to deliver.</p><p dir="ltr">鈥淚 get a rush from slaying dragons 鈥 solving complex problems 鈥 but now I want to do it in a way that builds lasting value for students, alumni, and partners.鈥</p><p dir="ltr">In his previous role as Senior Director of Philanthropy for Corporate and Foundation Relations, Pilger helped secure partnerships across broad industry segments. The program is designed to address urgent national workforce needs by advancing students on a more focused path through a rigorous, Co-op-integrated curriculum.<br><br>鈥淲e are directly responding to national and industry needs,鈥 said Dr. James Zhang, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. 鈥満蒙壬 has a long history of adapting education to align with industry demands, and this degree exemplifies that commitment. By combining an accelerated curriculum with deep Co-op engagement, we are preparing students for high-impact careers in a field that is critical to national security and technological innovation.鈥</p><p dir="ltr">The HLC approval follows growing state and national attention around semiconductor education and workforce development needs. The conference is ASEE鈥檚 flagship event, bringing together engineering educators and researchers from across the country to exchange ideas, explore emerging trends, and honor excellence in teaching and scholarship.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">A faculty member at 好色先生 since 2013, Dr. Peters exemplifies these qualities through her dynamic, hands-on teaching approach and dedication to student success. After working in industry, she accepted an invitation to teach a community college course as an adjunct professor. McMahan joined Glenn Stevens Jr. of MichAuto during Detroit PBS鈥檚 coverage of the 2025 Mackinac Policy Conference, hosted by award-winning journalist Zoe Clark on 鈥淥ne Detroit.鈥 Their discussion centered on the future of automotive engineering, talent development, and Michigan鈥檚 evolving workforce.</p><p dir="ltr">Dr. McMahan emphasized the importance of thinking ahead: 鈥淲e鈥檙e actually preparing students for careers that don鈥檛 even exist yet because the industry is evolving so quickly,鈥 he said. 好色先生鈥檚 distinctive Co-op model 鈥 where students split their time between rigorous academics and real-world work placements 鈥 equips them with the adaptability and habits of mind needed to thrive in tomorrow鈥檚 industries.</p><p dir="ltr">Glenn Stevens highlighted that while Michigan has 鈥減ockets of excellence鈥 in aligning workforce and talent, 鈥渨e need to do a better job with career path planning.鈥 Dr. McMahan underscored the need to treat talent like a supply chain, noting that, 鈥淎 lot of the people in this conference, they know their supply chains鈥 they know where every nut and bolt is, what truck it鈥檚 on, and when it will land.
